Incorporating a healthier lifestyle and regular physical exercise is a priority for many people.
However, when there is insufficient knowledge about physical exercise, a more personalized guidance is very important to ensure that exercises are performed safely and effectively. Additionally, an initial physical assessment is also crucial: in fact, this is a fundamental step.
This is what Personal Trainer Bruno Vasconcelos says. BOOMFIT spoke with him about the importance of these processes and how they can directly influence the success and motivation of exercise practitioners.
"It's a kind of interview"
The initial physical assessment is essential for anyone seeking a personalized training plan, as it ensures safety and effectiveness in the exercise program. Bruno Vasconcelos even described this process as a "kind of interview", which allows the Personal Trainer to learn about the new athlete’s habits, understand their goals, and establish realistic and achievable targets: "The initial assessment helps build a trusting and committed relationship between the trainer and the trainee". This relationship is crucial to ensure both are “aligned and committed” to progress.
When asked about the importance of the data collected during this first contact, Bruno considers them crucial for building an efficient and individualized training plan: "There is a lot of data we can collect, but usually, due to limited time and our workload, we focus on the essential data". Among the main data collected are “body composition, including weight, height, fat mass, muscle mass, body water, visceral fat, and bone mass”, although whenever time and need allow, a “postural and cardiorespiratory evaluation” can also be performed.
Regarding the impact that this initial physical assessment has on the development of the training program, Bruno states that "each person has different needs, and the assessment allows the training to be individually adjusted, ensuring that progress is gradual and safe". This personalization is essential to prevent injuries and adapt training according to each student’s limitations and goals. From the assessment, the Personal Trainer can “periodize the training and make necessary adjustments over time”, allowing steady progress aligned with the set objectives.
However, the physical assessment is not a static process: it is recommended to perform a new assessment every two to three months, so as to "compare the student’s performance and development and evaluate the results obtained during that period". This regular monitoring not only serves to “measure results” but also as a way to “motivate the student” to continue their regular exercise practice.
Besides periodic evaluations, progress is monitored daily and weekly. The Personal Trainer maintains constant dialogue with the student to ensure they feel comfortable with the program: "Some postural corrections are made during training and if there is any pain or discomfort, we adjust the exercises, loads, and intensity", says Bruno, highlighting the importance of constant supervision.
The fact that the initial physical assessment is a “great motivator” for students, Bruno points out the importance of setting tangible goals so that the process does not become frustrating. "It is fundamental to break down big goals into smaller ones so the student feels small victories". By achieving these smaller goals, the student begins to see training as a healthy lifestyle rather than just a “temporary hobby”, he adds.
"Start with more accessible goals"
For other professionals in the field, Bruno shares some important tips about the physical assessment process. "First of all, use language that is easy for the student to understand", he suggests. Furthermore, he emphasizes the importance of “prescribing training plans appropriate to the student’s possibilities and needs” as well as “maintaining periodic supervision to ensure motivation and continuous progress”.
For those starting a training plan, the Personal Trainer advises setting small goals right after the initial assessment. "Starting with more accessible goals allows the student to enjoy progress and gradually achieve their objectives", he highlights. Another recommendation is to combine nutritional guidance with training. "Nutritionists and Personal Trainers working together can help obtain better results and consequently increase adherence to physical exercise”.
Final Considerations
The initial physical assessment is an indispensable step for any personalized training program. Besides allowing the understanding of the student’s physical condition, it also builds a relationship of trust and commitment, facilitating the safe and effective achievement of goals.
With proper guidance and periodic assessments, progress is monitored and the student’s motivation is maintained.
For Personal Trainers just starting out, the message Bruno leaves is clear: “setting realistic and accessible goals and maintaining constant guidance are the pillars for success in practicing physical exercise.”
Happy Training!
