"Outdoor Workout Suggestions for Summer Times" for Personal Trainers, by Raquel Antunes

“Sugestões de treinos fora do ginásio em tempos de verão” para Personal Trainers, by Raquel Antunes

Summer seems to have finally arrived in full force! If you are a Personal Trainer, here is a unique opportunity to impress your athletes even more by offering workouts different from the usual ones and, of course, breaking the routine.

BOOMFIT once again gives voice to professionals to help others boost their offerings and show how they can become more complete and committed professionals within their community.

We spoke with Raquel Antunes, an expert in the fitness world. She is a Personal Trainer who helps many athletes through a mobile application, “Boost Plan,” allowing access to personalized and tailored Training Plans for each individual.

Training outdoors is "breaking the usual routine"

When we asked Raquel if she advocated outdoor workouts with the rising temperatures, she immediately answered: “Completely!”

She explained that outdoor workouts can be a means to “bring more motivation” and “improve mood, especially if we are in contact with nature,” also adding an extra element to the sessions: “Depending on the chosen location for training, it is possible to have challenging sessions even using just body weight,” she says, adding that she likes to use the “combination of slower cadence exercises and plyometric exercises, for example: walking lunges combined with plyometric squats” or “alternating lower and upper limbs in a circuit format. If the session spot has a bench or low wall, it’s also interesting to use it to include other exercises like Bulgarian split squats, step ups, elevated foot push-ups, etc.,” she adds.

For athletes, this brings a fresh boost, especially since “it’s natural that at this time of year, students tend to be less engaged with training,” says Raquel, emphasizing that outdoor sessions make the athlete break from the “usual routine” and “test different limits,” putting their strength to the test with “calisthenic exercises like pull-ups, dips or push-ups. These are certainly benefits we can gain from an outdoor session,” she adds.

Raising awareness for year-round exercise practice

However, for the Personal Trainer, it is completely normal that all professionals notice less interest from athletes during summer, mainly because “the majority of their clients/students are not professional athletes but people seeking certain aesthetic and health results, that is, people who find it easier to disconnect from training.” Therefore, the professional suggests that each trainer “keeps this in mind and prepares for these months,” but always instills in the athlete the need for training to not be limited to a certain time of year: “I consider it important throughout the year to make an effort to make the student aware that exercise practice should be maintained year-round, highlighting the benefits this represents.”

Professionals should also create other ways to keep clients/athletes, especially those who work in-person at home or own a fitness space: “It’s increasingly important to have tools that allow their clients to train with them even outside the gym,” says Raquel, adding that this can involve creating “online training packages (via Zoom or other platforms), so the client continues training and, of course, revenue has a smaller dip during the summer months.”

Final considerations

For Raquel, outdoor workouts are the necessary “boost,” since the athlete “breaks the routine,” bringing benefits to the session but also enabling the athlete to “test different limits” and even push beyond them!

Therefore, the professional recommends this type of training be introduced to clients, allowing new training dynamics, pulling them out of their comfort zone, and giving a push during typically less active months.
