2024: START or RESTART?

2024: START or RESTART?

The first month of the year brings many emotions, resolutions, and decisions made during the festive season, which are quickly and easily forgotten.

If you are a personal trainer, you know well how difficult it is to maintain this initial enthusiasm throughout the entire year! Multiple studies from universities such as Illinois and Harvard show that including meditation and yoga components significantly improves various aspects of daily life, from sleep and concentration to memory and injury prevention!

We all need:

A moment of (re)Start

"Meditation means the ability to be joyful alone, the ability to be happy with oneself, the ability to keep oneself company. Being with oneself is meditation. There is no need for another in meditation: the joy of solitude, not the misery of loneliness, is meditation."

Osho, spiritual leader and author of more than 600 books on spirituality.

If there are any doubts, studies prove that including meditation and yoga in training plans brings many advantages to the athlete:

1- Improves focus and concentration

Bringing yoga and meditation into training plans is an excellent complement as it helps improve contraction and mental focus daily or on the goals set together when planning the training.

A study from the University of Illinois, USA shows that regular yoga practice improves the body's response to stress and that there are significant improvements in focus and memory. Other studies even indicate that it can play a positive role in fighting degenerative diseases associated with aging, such as Alzheimer's.

2- Stress and anxiety decrease

Everyday life is enough to make us feel more restless and anxious. Therefore, including a relaxation moment in training plans can be effective in reducing stress and anxiety.

Adding meditation and yoga to plans improves the body's response to stress, helping athletes cope with physical and mental challenges. In fact, yoga can reduce anxiety and other negative emotions that affect behavior, boost energy levels after just a few minutes of practice, and decrease depression.

3- Prevents injuries and accelerates muscle recovery

Yoga practice also enhances what is called body awareness; athletes gain a better perception of their body's behavior, recognizing signs of fatigue and managing physical effort differently.

Furthermore, regular yoga can improve flexibility, range of motion, and even balance. In fact, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control recognize yoga as a physical activity that increases muscle elasticity (known as tone) and bone strength.

4- Enables quality sleep

Sleeping is an essential component of any training plan (in fact, it was part of our tip 7 on how to create a successful training plan!). Regulated sleep allows for more productive training with significant long-term impact.

This is where meditation and yoga come in: these two practices positively affect sleep by not only reducing stress and anxiety but also decreasing the time it takes to fall asleep and improving sleep quality, resulting in calmer nights and more restorative rest.

Final Conclusions

A training plan is much more than achieving goals: it involves commitment and motivation. Adding a mental wellness component will help keep your athlete committed, focused, and motivated.
