How do you choose the right floor for your fitness studio?
If you have a fitness studio or if you're thinking of refurbishing it, you must recognise that there are many issues to take into account: the equipment, the capacity of the space,… and the floor. Yes, the flooring of a fitness studio is of great importance, as it has to guarantee safety for the practice of sport, while ensuring the necessary comfort for athletes to be able to do their workouts without any problems.
In this article, we're going to clarify a few aspects to take into account when you're choosing flooring for your gym or fitness space. And if you're thinking of remodelling, now's the time to take note.
What questions should I ask when choosing flooring?
1 - How do I install and clean the floor?
"Construction sites" is something that sends shivers down the spine just thinking about it. The difficulties, the deadlines that aren't met, the chaos in our space... in short, so many problems that arise when we just want to make our space look better. If you can't afford to hire a company or if you rely on your DIY skills, you should opt for options that are easy to install without the need for specific tools.
Cleanliness should also be taken into account, as it is an element that increases or decreases the satisfaction of the athletes who choose your gym to train. Always opt for floors that are easy to clean, especially in places where people pass through constantly.
2 - Will the floor be used a lot?
This is a crucial question, not least because, taking into account the use you're going to make of it (type of services/exercises on offer, number of athletes/expected training sessions, equipment, etc.), the floor won't be uniform throughout your entire gym: the floor of the lifting room will be different from the floor of the reception area which, in turn, will be different from the floor of the room dedicated to step sessions.
All these aspects will strongly influence your choices, and you should check and confirm that the flooring will be able to protect the equipment (preventing unnecessary damage), the original floor of the space and the structure of the building itself from all the load it will be subjected to. Furthermore, if your fitness space is part of a residential building, you may need a different type of flooring to isolate noise and vibrations, thus avoiding problems with the neighbours.
3 - Will the flooring be installed indoors or outdoors?
Despite their versatility, we have already seen that many types of flooring may not be the most suitable to be installed in any kind of space, as they may not have the right properties. On top of this, many types of flooring may not be able to withstand extreme weather conditions such as snow or intense heat.
Therefore, you should consider characteristics such as water permeability, preventing puddles from forming in rainy weather, and ease of cleaning. Synthetic grass can be an excellent option, as well as offering the space more lightness and comfort.
4 - Will the floor provide enough stability to perform the exercises?
The safety in sports practice is essential in any space because, in addition to the credibility that this demonstrates, it ensures that athletes don't take unnecessary risks, not least because that's not the aim!
When you're choosing a floor for your fitness space, you need to take into account whether it offers a certain level of grip and stability, allowing to avoid injuries due to falls or improper movement of equipment.
5 - Can I create a multipurpose space?
If your idea is to create a multi-purpose space (because your fitness space is (still!) small or because you want to offer a more personalised service), you can combine several types of flooring in the same room, allowing you to create specific areas for each of the practices you want to offer.
If you want to offer temporary activities, you can also opt for reversible flooring, such as BOOMFIT's Tatami. This type of puzzle-shaped floor can be laid when needed and is ideal for sports activities such as martial arts.
Final Toughts
If every house starts with the foundations, every fitness space starts with the ideal floor. It's up to you, as a personal trainer, to understand the needs of your athletes, offering them a safe space to train, providing all the necessary equipment and this necessarily includes a floor that can withstand all their needs, but that is versatile enough for what you want to offer.
At BOOMFIT, we have several types of flooring available to meet the needs of your fitness space. And if you need help, our team is always available: just let us know!
